Packing for Umrah is less about quantity and more about the right items. Here are the seven categories our team checks with every departing group, based on what pilgrims most often wish they had brought.
For a first Umrah, pack in seven categories: ihram clothing, comfortable footwear you can walk in for hours, modest layered clothing, prescription medicines with their original packaging, a small prayer mat and duas list, a refillable water bottle, and a document pouch holding your passport, visa and hotel vouchers together. Pack for walking and for five daily prayers rather than for a holiday.
What's inside this guide
1. Ihram extras, not just the ihram
Carry two ihram sets for men, not one — they get dusty and washed items may not dry quickly in hotel bathrooms. Add a secure ihram belt with a zip pocket for money and your room card, plus a few safety pins and a small drawstring bag for sandals.
2. Comfortable footwear and a shoe bag
You will walk far more than you expect, often barefoot on marble. Choose sandals that are broken in, easy to slip off and light to carry. A clearly labelled cloth bag keeps your shoes together at the Haram entrances during busy hours.
3. Documents and money, prepared twice
- Passport, visa printout and hotel vouchers in one folder.
- Photocopies and phone photographs of every document.
- A mix of Saudi riyals in small notes and an international card.
- Emergency contact numbers written on paper, not only saved in your phone.
4. Medicines and a small first-aid pouch
Pack prescription medicines in original packaging with a copy of the prescription, plus paracetamol, an anti-diarrhoeal, rehydration sachets, blister plasters, throat lozenges and a basic ointment for chafing. Blisters and dehydration are the two most common complaints among first-time pilgrims.
5. A dedicated prayer kit
- A lightweight travel prayer mat.
- A pocket Qur'an or a downloaded recitation app with offline audio.
- A small duas booklet with the tawaf and sa'i supplications.
- Tasbeeh, tissues and an unscented roll-on (fragrance-free while in ihram).
6. Clothing that handles the heat
Light, loose cotton in neutral colours, a light jacket for heavily air-conditioned hotels and a spare abaya or two for ladies. Laundry services near the Haram are affordable and quick, so pack for a week and wash as you go.
7. The small things people forget
- A refillable water bottle and a collapsible umbrella for shade.
- A power bank — long days at the Haram drain phone batteries fast.
- A universal adapter if you carry electronics.
- Snacks such as dates, nuts and glucose biscuits for between prayers.
- A small notebook for supplications and reflection.
One more item worth adding: patience. The experience is deeply personal, and having everything prepared in advance lets you focus entirely on your ibadah.
